It’s called the vagus nerve—and it’s the superhighway of your brain-body connection.
Stretching from your brainstem all the way to your belly, the vagus nerve touches nearly every major organ. Think of it as the bridge between your thoughts, your emotions, and your physical responses. It plays a central role in regulating your digestion, heart rate, breath, voice, and even your sense of safety.
Why This Matters for Highly Sensitive Souls
If you often feel stuck in cycles of anxiety, emotional reactivity, shame, people-pleasing, or exhaustion—this isn’t just “in your head.” It’s likely your nervous system has been living in survival mode for years.
Maybe you grew up in a home where emotions weren’t safe. Maybe you had to be the calm one, the good one, the fixer. Over time, your system became wired to be on alert, scanning for danger—whether that danger looked like conflict, disappointment, or abandonment.

Vagal Tone = Emotional Flexibility
When your vagus nerve is strong—what we call having high vagal tone—you can move through stress or challenge and return to a sense of calm. You can have a tough conversation and come back to center. You can feel triggered but not hijacked. You have emotional flexibility.
But when vagal tone is weak, your system gets stuck. You spin in anxiety. You freeze in overwhelm. You shut down in shame. The body can’t complete the stress cycle, and so symptoms like digestive issues, pain, inflammation, and insomnia start to show up.
Good News: You Can Rewire This
Your vagus nerve can be strengthened. This is what nervous system healing is all about.
